SUPERVISING U.S. PROBATION OFFICER

Janet Bergland was appointed a Supervising United States Probation Officer for the Southern District of California in October 2009. She currently manages the Sex Offender Program for the Southern District of California and supervises several Sex Offender Specialist officers. Her career, as a federal probation officer, began in 1989 with the District of Minnesota. Janet transferred to the Southern District of California in 1996. In 2000, she was promoted to Senior United States Probation Officer as a Sex Offender and Mental Health Specialist at which time she supervised a high activity and high risk caseload of sex offenders and chronically mentally ill. Prior to going into federal law enforcement, Ms. Bergland was a Correctional Counselor for five years at the Minnesota Correctional Facility for Women at Shakopee, Minnesota. Ms. Bergland has a bachelor of science degree in Criminal Justice and a minor in Psychology from the University of Wisconsin and a master’s of science degree in Corrections, Human Services Planning and Development, and Counseling from the University of Minnesota. In addition to her formal education, she is also a graduate of the Federal Judicial Center’s Leadership Development Program.
